Boris Plotz,
director of Plotz Funeral Homes, dreamed of only two things as a young
boy, dancing and Betty. Betty always secretly loved Boris, but could not
fight her father's wishes, so she was married off to a gold digger. Boris
gave up his dreams and took over the family's undertaking business. Their
lives continue as normal until Betty's mother-in-law dies. Boris and Betty
are thrust together again, and as they discuss the funeral arrangements
for Betty's mother-in-law, the old spark is re-kindled.
Her funeral will
be held at Plotz Funeral Homes, much to the chagrin of rival funeral director,
Frank Featherbed. Featherbed, an American, is determined to revolutionise
the undertaking business in England through the innovation of themed funerals.
Boris discovers
that the only obstacle between him and Betty's love for one another, is
her marriage to the two-timing Mayor. In a desperate bid for happiness
Boris and Betty decide to stage her death and run away together.
Meanwhile Featherbed
is holding his first funeral, and much to the surprise of the bereaved,
it has a Star Trek theme. During the service Featherbed's assistant operates
the special effects that produce the smoke and music. However, when he
pushes the switch that raises the coffin for the" beam me up"
effect, the switch sticks and the coffin breaks through the roof!
Boris pursues his
plan for faking Betty's death by enlisting the help of the town doctor.
Everything goes according to plan, Boris and Betty dance at the town picnic
and Betty tumbles over the edge of a cliff. However, the onlookers can't
see that Betty has only fallen a few feet to a small ledge. Boris holds
back the crowd while Betty manages to scramble down a rope to the bottom
of the ravine. The town Doctor splashes her with fake blood, it looks
like they are going to get away with it, until Featherbed insists that
he do the funeral. Betty's two-timing husband is about to agree, when
the Doctor saves the day by declaring that Betty's dying words were Plotz.
But still, nothing
goes as planned. At her funeral Betty is forced to endure the confessions
of both her two-timing husband, who is thrilled to have Betty's money
at last, and his mistress, who has been plotting Betty's death. All the
while Betty is forced to hold her breath and pretend that she is dead.
After a series of mishaps Boris and Betty manage to escape together only
to be foiled by Featherbed. But Betty turns the tables by enlisting Featherbed
and Boris to help her in taking an appropriate revenge on her two-timing
husband and his murderous mistress.
