A Californian
suburb, the present. When young Tolly loses a tooth, she hides it under
her pillow for the tooth fairy. The tooth fairy's function is actually
carried out by "dental reimbursement operatives", a workforce
based in underground Fairytopia. Fairytopia's operations - principally
the production of Christmas presents - were once driven by magic, but
are now supported by cash raised by tooth retrieval.
Teenage operative
565, known as Tooth, falls asleep while collecting Tolly's tooth inadvertently
transferring all of Fairytopia's cash reserves to Tolly and her brother
Tom's bedroom. Having bankrupted Fairytopia, Tooth is ordered by her boss,
the Easter Bunny, to retieve the money before Christmas. Tooth returns
to Tom and Tolly's house but the money has been taken away by binmen.
With only hours left to save Christmas, Tooth, Tom and Tolly try to track
down the mysterious Mrs C, who is believed to be able to restore the magic
to Fairytopia. They are followed by Plug, a bounty hunter who has staked
his reputation on capturing and proving the existence of both fairies.
After encountering
the former associates of Mrs C, elves Jarvis Jarvis and Bon Bon, Tooth,
Tolly and Tom are captured by Plug but escape with help from their would
be torturer The Extractor (a former tooth fairy). The youngsters track
Mrs C down to a retirement home for magicians. Intially reluctant, Mrs
C (Santa Claus' wife), agrees to help. They return to Fairytopia but are
followed by Plug and his men. Plug returns to the upper world with the
Easter Bunny as a hostage and seals off access to Fairytopia. Encouraged
by Mrs C, Tooth develops the ability to fly, and reopens the entrance
to Fairytopia. With help from her colleagues, Tooth frees the Easter Bunny
and defeats Plug.
