During the German Occupation of
France during the Second World War, many spies working for the French
Resistance movement lived in constant fear of betrayal by collaborators
or simply by careless talk.
Jean Moulin,
one of the chief figures in the French Resistance, used his power and
contacts as a senior civil servant to gather information on German troop
movements. Known by the codename 'Max', his information was invaluable
to Resistance sabotage groups and also to the Allied Forces in Britain.
Moulin's downfall
came about when Nazi soldiers stormed a clandestine meeting between Moulin
and the heads of the Resistance groups in June 1943. His undoing came
as a tip off to the Gestapo, by Rene Hardy, another key Resistance figure.
Moulin was interrogated by the infamous Klaus Barbie and was tortured
for days without ever giving away any information, before dying from the
injuries he sustained at Barbie's hands.
