Robinson Crusoe, the timeless
adventure classic - interpreted for our time.
The story is
well-known: a man is shipwrecked on a deset island, overcomes solitude
and the harshness of life in the wild, finds and 'civilises' a native
he calls "Friday", returns to his home after many years. In
this adaptation starring French screen star Pierre Richard, however, the
story is reinterpreted with a message of tolerance uniquely suited to
our time.
Holding centre
stage is the sparkling match of wits between Robinson and Friday, the
young native saved by Robinson. With subtlety and naturalness, Friday
opposes his own 'pagan' views and beliefs to those of Robinson, ultimately
proving them as valid and valuable as his companion's.
At the latest when
Robinson calls his companion by his real name, Itaua, and takes part in
Itaua's dance to the native gods does not this 'Robinson Crusoe' makes
a compelling case for brotherly love and greater understanding. The hero's
inner transformation proves as exciting, engaging and entertaining as
his many adventures on the desert island.
